Jon Kvassay Next Artist Featured on feverdream Mural
A few weeks ago we rotated our mural to Jon Kvassay’s work! The approximately 38 foot tall mural was installed on The Shoreway building on W. 76th Street in Battery Park, right on the outskirts of the Gordon Square Arts District. The previous mural featured the work of Nick Lee, our fourth resident artist. A few days after install we were able to meet with the artist behind the work, Jon Kvassay, at the site of his new mural.
Mural depicts what Kvassay has been working on for a while, and especially during his residency: members of the animal kingdom fighting for survival in an ambiguous space. There are elements of the natural floating in the space, but it has been removed from all context of nature—they are floating in a dark ochre color. Mixed within those natural elements like rocks and plants, Kvassay mixes in a few circular orbs which to him represent the supernatural. At the bottom, he signs it with is signature dinosaur skull.
In reference to the residency, he mentioned that he was very happy with how the mural turned out, despite some concerns about the the limitations imposed by a difficult aspect ratio:
“My favorite piece was probably the mural piece. It just worked out the way I wanted it to, and, yeah, it just it felt the best.
Given the [aspect ratio] limitation really, honestly, it wasn't as big a deal as I thought. You know, you just I went I went over to the mural that's up, to Nick's, took a picture of it, traced the shape, and then just figured it out from there, and it worked out pretty well.”
We really hope you enjoy this mural during the fall with its appropriate seasonal palette!
