Homage: feverdream’s Second Annual Resident Show

Preface

Founded in August 2022, feverdream is an emerging arts organization. The first to launch, and still the hallmark program of feverdream, is the artist residency. The aim of this program is to offer promising artists an opportunity to focus exclusively on their craft by providing resources and a creative workspace conducive to these endeavors. The residency program continues to evolve with ambitious international aspirations. At present, however, and in addition to facilitating the artist’s work, feverdream is increasing artists’ opportunities for critique and constructive feedback from peers and mentors, and developing and providing physical and digital platforms that provide for increased artist exposure through public curation efforts. Under the current program each resident has a piece of their work featured in a mural scale on the side of the shoreway building in a highly visible location at the entrance to Edgewater Park. Additionally, the resident's work is featured in the annual resident show, that is an anthology show showing distinct groupings of each resident from the past year. The residents play an active role in conceiving of the joint show, marketing and creating awareness.

Show Statement

Homage is a gesture of respect, a tribute, and an acknowledgment of connection. Though the styles of Nick, Jon, and Jihad may be diverse, each reflects a personal tribute to what resonates deeply with them. These works, through their symbolic forms, invite viewers to interpret and derive meaning from their own perspectives. Whether through a deliberately visceral or striking arrangement, these pieces offer a perspective that is more figurative and contemplative than literal or singular. They stand as an homage to memory, place, and people-a reverence for experience above all. Enjoy.

What does Homage mean to you?

Nick Lee: “Within this series of paintings, I pay homage to my Japanese ancestry and my American identity. Through still lifes, these works depict a variety of topics that are deeply personal to me. The Asian American experience is seldom championed in contemporary Western painting. I hope these pieces are a beacon of light for those who long for this imagery like I do. The objects in the still lifes serve as vessels to connect with an Eastern heritage that has been suppressed. My intentions are to respect the narratives that each cultural object represents and to bring new life into the paintings. These works celebrate where my people come from and emphasize our perspective.”

Jon Kvassay: “These paintings are about life and death, nature and the weight of suffering. I suppose I’m paying homage to the supernatural and the places that make the supernatural at home. Big spaces that open the imagination and provide the unknown a home.”

Jihad Dennis:
“He on track
Bet they pull up and spray
It’s all black where I’m at
Such a beauty a grace
But it’s Fall back what’s ya net
You ain’t kin in this space a
Stray dawg Dragging paws
Heart locked in a cage

Confined Between the lines
Scribe of vital lines
Indebted to troubled times
Blessed beyond riches
