Elizabeth Lax Next Featured on feverdream Mural

Elizabeth with her mural “Motherland.”

Earlier this month, it was that time of year where we rotate our mural with new artwork to showcase the work of the next resident artist. The passing of the guard so to speak. The resident in question: Elizabeth Lax.

On July 7th, the approximately 38 foot mural was installed on The Shoreway building on W. 76th Street in Battery Park, right on the outskirts of the Gordon Square Arts District. The previous mural featured the work of Nolan Meyer, our first resident artist.

This new mural by Elizabeth Lax titled “Motherland,” depicts a solitary boat atop a deep body of dark water with an ambiguous landscape in the background. Lax sourced the images from vintage family photos her grandfather took, giving the work a timeless feel. She wanted to make a work that played with the themes of nostalgia and memory—the same themes she grappled with in the work she made during the residency—but she also aimed for a feeling: one of unease, tension, and eeriness. This work deliberately plays with the economy of mark and content in the composition to exude that eerie feeling of being seemingly alone. But with so much water beneath the surface, the viewer can’t help but wonder what lies beneath.

Stop by and admire this beautiful mural over the course of the next few months!
