by Gillian Canacci
In my art practice I first start by taking photos of observations I make while I am hiking or walking. This includes: close ups of bubbling water, fallen tree branches from different angles, and shadows casted on the ground. I am drawn to recording these things because of the fragility of their existence in reality. I then use these images as a starting off point for my drawings and paintings. I layer these images over each other, further abstracting them. The forms that I create often transform into something else, appearing as the human form, an organ, a fossil, etc. My work aims to tie the human experience to nature and explore the ever changing notion of the world that reminds us of our mortality.
